Today is Sunday,
Today I started early. I walked quite a bit. I went to the woodblock print gallery again. Tomorrow I think I want to buy a couple of prints. I got soaked because it rained alot. Now I need to study.
Bye for now,
Chris

I went looking for a trail up to the top of another mountain, but ended up just walking all over the place. I went out of town to the north, then found a sign for an in town sort of walking trail. I followed that until it ended and figured out I ended up near Kinkakuji. I know there was a woodblock gallery down the way from the temple so I went to check it out again. I looked at the prints for quite awhile and decided I'll buy some tomorrow, they take credit cards so I don't have to use my cash money. I found an excellent artist by the name of Seiji Sano who has exhibited his work worldwide (look him up). I wanted to expand my collection anyway. Well as I said up there, I need to study some before I go back out to practice my shakuhachi in the rain.

Good afternoon,
Today I studied Japanese and my TEFL class, and ate breakfast and lunch. I will draw a picture(I saw kaku used for writing a drawing so I used that). Tomorrow I will look for a new trail. I don't know where to look though. That trail is probably near the northern Kamo river.
Later,
Chris

I have worked out a new study method for Japanese. I will do 20-30 minute session 2-3 times a day. I read that is supposed to work better. Once in the morning, maybe in the afternoon(depending on the day) and once at night. My shakuhachi practice I have down. I do about an hour or so a day down by the river. My drawings I do in between all that, and my photos the rest of the time, at least when I'm wandering around. I also have to put in good time on my TEFL class at least once a day too. Got some books I have to read also. Lessons are only once a week, so on that day my shakuhachi work turns into 2 hours because of course I'm gonna want to practice what I was just taught. Sounds like alot, but I don't know what else I'd be doing. Later my paper will take some priority, but by then hopefully I'll be done with my TEFL class. Blah, blah, sorry.

Good evening,
Today I went to the Kyoto botanical gardens. In the park I took pictures and did some drawings. In the Kamogawa park I practiced my shakuhachi at 5. I played the shakuhachi for someone also. He said I was good. After that I returned home.
Later,
Chris

That pretty much sums up the day. That was kinda fun playing for the fellow. Too bad I couldn't understand half of what he said. Bah, must study Japanese harder. No worries, I'll get there someday. For the time being I'll just be a stupid gaijin, hehe.

All right! I will probably start my shakuhachi lessons today or tomorrow.

(I'll write some more later)

Yup started my shakuhachi lessons today. I also figured out the subway (which was actually really easy). I got to see Toji on the way, but didnt get any pictures today. I was trying to find my senseis house. I kinda randomly showed up, but someone cancelled and I got a lesson in (and for free, first one was on the house). We played though Kumoijishi, a nice Edo period honkyoku piece. I think now I have all of my classwork rolling nicely in place. Just gotta start my paper here in a week or two.

Today I studied Japanese and finished my picture. At 4 I will practice shakuhachi down by the Kamo river. Tomorrow I want to go to Shimogamo again.
Bye for now,
Chris

I will test out my other memory card in my camera tomorrow at Shimogamo to make sure my camera isnt messed up. The other memory card it toast it looks like. I can't re-format it and it wont work in my camera. Oh well, at least I brought that other one. I got plenty of use out of that last one anyway. I'll bring my sketchpad with me to Shimogamo jinja to do some quick studies of the area, that should be fun. Mostly today I'm just working on this class and the other one I'm taking.
(For those not my teachers this blog is part of my contract. It is like the daily journal I usually keep with contracts, but on the computer. One difference is my notes from reading and so forth don't go on here. I still write those.)

Good afternoon,
Today I went to Ninnaji. Then after that I did the small shikoku pilrimage. Now I'm rather tired I must say. I started another drawing too.
Until later,
Chris

Oh no, my blasted memoery card in my camera croaked today. I got all sorts of cool pictures from Ninnaji. That temple has a 5-story pagoda (not a big as Toji) and a number of other cool buildings. Part of the old Imperial Palace was moved to the site and there is a number of wonderful paintings in one of the buildings. 500yen for that building, but the rest of the area is free. Worth the look indeed. To bad my photos didn't make it. I'll go back since there is two other nice temples right in the area. Well I do have another memory card I'll use, but it is only 1/4 of the size. Hopefully I can get the other one working again. I still have to go out and do my shakuhachi practice by the river.

Today I rested.

I did actually go out and about some. I went to find a pond I saw on a map, but alas that is all it was. When I got to it it was just a big pond, not much more. Oh well. Tomorrow I will head for the mini-pilgrimage styled after the shikoku 88 temple one. As far as I know it is located behind ninna-ji, not to far from Kinkakuji. Sounds like it would be a nice hike. If anyone knows of some places to hike that I can access on foot from here let me know. Just put a comment on here or let me know somehow. Well besides that I'm just gonna lounge around and do some classwork (the written variety).
Chris

The above picture is from a Shrine I found yesterday while looking for the entrance to the trail up Daimonji. Beautiful little spot at the end of some road.

Good morning,
Today I want to go to the Silver pavilion. These is a trail behind the silver pavilion. Besides that I will rest today.
Later,
Chris

Hopefully everyone notices that the first part is the Japanese, the second the translation and then this part where I talk about whatever else I did. Just thought I'd let you know since some computers can't see the Japanese script. I'll probably put up some pics on flickr later and one on here.
Update for today:I went to Ginkakuji, it was busy but not as much. On the way I found another shrine I will visit later and one I did visit right next to Ginkakuji which was a nice little shrine. After that I asked directions to the trail leading to the top of Daimonji the mountain with the big 大 on it. I talked to a nice fellow but could only make out 1/3 of what he was saying in Japanese. We waited for his friend who could speak English and she told me what I had already deducted from my converstation with the fellow. Anyway I made it to the trail head and hiked all the way to the top. Not very far really, about 40min to the big 大, and another 20 to the very top. A nice hike but also relatively busy, oh well. I got to practice my konnichiwa's about a hundred times with people going by. I could see the whole city from the top, nice view. Later, after I made it back here, I went out again to practice my shakuhachi on my practice spot, that I have adopted along the river. I dont much like to play in front of people, but not much else I can do. I guess I will get used to it. Well enough of me going on, I'm just enjoying myself here.

Good afternoon,
Today I went to the golden pavilion. It was very busy. It only took me a couple of hours on foot to get there and back. Later on I need to go to the grocery store because I ran out of food.
                             Later,
Chris

The picture is of the golden pavilion, covered with gold leaf. Pretty neat lookin huh. Well I think I'd better start metering out what I want to do. I have started a list of things I need to take pics of and draw.
-Ginkakuji and the trail that goes to the big 大.
-Fushimi Inari jinja
-Tofukuji (Myoanji is part of the temple complex, you know the shakuhachi playing monks.)
-Toji, it is near my sensei's dojo
-The philosophers path, everyone is telling me to do that one.
-I'll keep thinking of places to go.

To everyone,
TOday I went to the Kamogawa to practice shakuhachi. From my place on foot it took 45min to get there, but it was a beautiful spot. The weather was very nice. I resumed my drawings also.
Until next time,
Chris

I hope my Japanese isn't too bad. I'm still learning. I figured a good way would be to jump in head first. I've gotten to talk to a few people(in Japanese of course) and I can understand ok. I'll pick up more as time goes along. I asked someone for directions yesterday and he helped me and out I could pick out enough to know what he was saying. That was a fairly good experience. Anyway, I'm gonna spend the rest of today studying this and that.

Good Morning everyone,
I woke up at 6am this morning. Today I want to go to Toji. My sensei lives near Toji. I will probably go to Kamigamo shrine also. From here to Toji will probably take two and a half hours by foot.
                              Until next time,
Chris

Update: I walked for almost 6 hours from 7:35 this morning to 1 in the afternoon. Didn't get to Toji, but on my way back I found Shimagamo jinja. I'll put some of the pics from there up later. I got to practice my Japanese to ask directions to Toji, but he said it was another half and hour to it. He told me the subway is the easiest way to get there. I'll try that out later. I'll probably go back out later around 4 to practice my shakuhachi playing at the river.

2nd day,
Today I woke up at 6am. Yesterday I walked up and down the Kamogawa and found the botanical gardens. It was very beautiful and only cost 200yen. I found another mini-mart to shop at that is close by also. I had my first 'can I practice English with you' encounter. A nice older fellow talked with me for awhile in the Botanical Gardens. I got to practice my Japanese and he his English. Today I will find the super market and try to stock up on basic food stuffs. For my Japanese study I think I'll setup 20 new kanji for each week along with up to 30 new words to memorize. I will see how that works and adjust accordingly. I found a nice spot on the river to play my shakuhachi and started a drawing too. Probably start my shakuhachi lessons next week or the end of this week. I worked up a schedule this morning also. Well I'm gonna start my day now.
Ja mata ne.
Chris

Update (same day): I hiked for about four hours down the Kamogawa today out of town and found a nice little trail down to the water. I came back into the city and made my way to Kamigamo jinja which is actually right near where I'm staying. It is a huge complex of shrines and trails. I put some pictures up on my flickr page check them out. Well I'm back and kinda tired, I probably walked 6 or 7 miles and its kinda hot out.
